Why Montera

Thank you for choosing to learn more about Montera Middle School, a community where your child’s academic success and personal growth are our top priorities—and where we take great pride in being Toro strong!

Montera offers a rich academic experience, complemented by diverse electives such as Woodshop, Art, and a thriving music program that has gained recognition for its excellence. Our school also focuses on student well-being through Wellness Days and community-building initiatives like Breaking Down the Walls, which nurture a supportive and inclusive environment.

Beyond academics, Montera’s vibrant school culture includes clubs, sports, and events that promote personal growth, collaboration, and wellness. We are committed to providing a dynamic and enriching middle school experience where all students can thrive.

Montera stood out for a couple of reasons.  The kids that ran the Q and A  at the in-person tours blew me away.  The kids were enthusiastic, well-spoken, and obvious leaders.  They were there because they wanted to be, which is a testament to the school.  You also get to study everything at Montera and take Spanish and two electives in addition to the CORE classes.

The amount of opportunities for students going on at Montera is incredible.  My son loves woodshop, art, sports, and learning how to play the guitar.  There seems to be endless possibilities for students with diverse interests. I really appreciate that!

We choose Montera because it felt like an intentional community.  It draws people from all across city.  We like that our kids can get to school on public transportation. We love the teachers and community. We also love the size of Montera because was the right fit for them to find their people.

I choose to work at Montera because I went to Montera. My mom worked at Montera for 20 years, and my daughter went to Montera. Montera is home for me! Montera is a place I like to be, and it has the room that I love to be in more than any other place in the world, and I get to work there every single day!

I love that the administration is open to new ideas and programs at Montera. I am excited that theater and ceramics classes are starting soon.

I have a 7th grader at Montera. We toured several middle schools, and I struck by the sense of community at Montera. I really like the teacher and administration. It felt like a safe community to be in.

My second child is now going through Montera. My older child started the same year as Mr. Avent. We thought he did a great job then. When we were touring schools again, we were amazed at how much the school had improved and Mr. Avent had a close team.  We love Dr. Williams too! We were also blown away by Mr. Runge’s Woodshop. That was thing that sold us on Montera. Both my kids appreciate being a part of Oakland in the public school system in its glorious and inglorious form.
